Pink October 2024: events in 10 major Occitan cities
Every year, many countries join forces forPink October, an international campaign to raise awareness of breast cancer screening.
In France, the pink ribbon has re-emerged as a proud symbol of solidarity with patients, support for research and the fight against disease.
Occitanie is not to be outdone, donning the emblematic color pink throughout the month of October.
In this article, you’ll find some key events to take part in in Occitanie’s biggest cities for Pink October 2024.
This list is by no means exhaustive, as there are numerous sporting, cultural and educational events on offer throughout the region.
Pink October in Toulouse
Toulouse, la Ville Rose, now lives up to its nickname better than ever.
As in many cities, its commitment is particularly visible thanks to a pink run/walk on October 6.
This sporting event brings together over 5,000 people in the city center in an atmosphere of solidarity.
Pink October in Montpellier
As every year, the Rue de la Loge is decked out in pink umbrellas to symbolize the protection afforded by early detection. This poetic and photogenic action draws the attention of the general public to the importance of prevention.
Theatrical performances are also scheduled to “de-dramatize” screening, notably on October 14, 20 and 21.
Pink October in Nîmes
La Zontienne solidarity race takes place on October 13 at the Mas d’Escattes estate. It includes 5 and 10 km courses, as well as a 6 km walk. The race attracts around 1,000 participants every year.
The Clock Tower is also illuminated in pink throughout the month.
The Musée de la Romanité, for its part, dresses the risers of its grand staircase in pink, with messages of prevention.
Pink October in Béziers
Its Pink Walk takes place on October 6, 2024 at Stade de Sauclières at 9am.
Participants can choose from three routes:
- a 7 km walk,
- an adapted 5 km walk,
- a 7 km race.
The event includes festive activities:
- a creative workshop,
- a children’s area,
- a camel ride (yes, yes),
- a tombola,
- reflexology sessions.
We’re also collecting new bras for the event.
Pink October in Perpignan
A dedicated village will be set up at City Hall on October 4. It features information stands and activities to promote breast and cervical cancer prevention.
In addition, a major solidarity concert will be held on October 19 in Bompas, a town near Perpignan. On the program: artists such as Pauline Ester and Francky Vincent.
Pink October in Narbonne
The Rose Fashion Show features women who have undergone breast cancer surgery. In this fashion show of solidarity, they present lingerie and nightwear. The event, on October 6 at Narbo Via, is open to all and free of charge.
In addition, a padel tournament will be held on October 7 to raise funds for charity.
Health rugby is also in the spotlight on October 13, at an event including another lingerie fashion show.
Pink October in Sète
The Amazon March starts on Saturday, October 5, at 9am, from Place Roger Theron to the Lido.
The association Les Moissons du Cœur collects the profits to support sick children.
A pink walk will also take place on October 24, from 9am to 12pm, starting from the Nicolas Gabino social center.
Pink October in Albi
On October 6, UGOLF Albi is organizing a golf tournament. There are lots of prizes to be won, including hot-air balloon and helicopter flights. Wear a touch of pink for the occasion!
Entertainment (dance show, quiz, games) will take place in Place du Vigan on the weekend of October 12.
Finally, Les Elles Roses takes place on October 13, with 5 and 10 km routes, as part of the Balades d’Octobre Rose.
Pink October in Carcassonne
On October 21, Carcassonne offers an experience conducive to relaxation and meditation: an open-air yoga session.
At the same time, an art exhibition showcases works created to raise awareness of the fight against breast cancer.
Pink October in Agde
The town of Agde is also organizing its traditional Course Rose on October 6.
Everyone can participate according to their ability, opting for either the 5 km or 10 km course. Children can also show off their talents in the Kid’s Run, a 1 km race.
But there are plenty of other activities throughout the month of October.
Why take part in Pink October?
By now, you’re familiar with the activities on offer, but what are the objectives of Pink October? Given the importance of what’s at stake, a little reminder is never useless.
Breast cancer is :
- nearly 60,000 new cases and 12,000 deaths per year;
- the most common cancer in women in France (it affects one woman in eight);
- the leading cause of cancer deaths (source: Santé publique France);
- it can also affect men.
Since 1994, French institutions have been organizing fund-raising events in October to support medical research. But the main aim is to promote prevention.
90% of breast cancers detected through early screening are cured.
A good cause that has been generating solidarity and awareness-raising events for over 30 years.
